POLAR sıf. (ing. k.). Kim. Uzaktan yaptığı etki bir elektrik dipolünün etkisine benzeyen molekül için kullanılır.

Bir molekül, artı yüklü bir çekirdek çevresinde bu çekirdeğin etkisiyle dolanan eksi yüklerden oluşmuş atomlardan meydana gelir; bu yüklerin dağılımı, artı yükler merkezinin eksi yükler merkeziyle çakışmasını sağlayabilecek bir simetride olursa, bu moleküle polar olmayan molekül denir. Soy gazların, hidrojenin, azotun molekülü bu türdendir. Aksi halde moleküle polar denir (su ve diğer birçok madde); bu durumda molekülün iki kutuplu bir elektrik momenti vardır. Bu moment toplam artı yükün yük merkezleri arasındaki mesafeyle çarpımına eşittir. Polarlaşma iyon halindeki bileşiklerde çok fazladır; mesela NaCl billuru Na ve Cl iyonlarının birleşmesinden meydana gelir; NaCl bütününde mutlak değer bakımından elektronunkine eşit iki yük birbirinden 2,8 X 10-8 sm mesafede bulunur; iki kutuplu elektrik momenti de 13,50 X 10-8 C.G.S.'dir (13,5 Debye birimi). Bu değerler genellikle polar moleküllerde daha küçüktür; bununla birlikte maddenin özelliklerinde, elektrik sabiti ve iyonlaşma gücü gibi önemli bir rol oynar.

  3. (a.) Of or pertaining to the magnetic pole, or to the point to which the magnetic needle is directed.
  4. (noun) The right line drawn through the two points of contact of the two tangents drawn from a given point to a given conic section. The given point is called the pole of the line. If the given point lies within the curve so that the two tangents become imaginary, there is still a real polar line which does not meet the curve, but which possesses other properties of the polar. Thus the focus and directrix are pole and polar. There are also poles and polar curves to curves of higher degree than the second, and poles and polar planes to surfaces of the second degree.
