Lisede öğrenci olduğu dönemde Miss Burbank güzellik yarışmasında birinci olur ve Warner Bros ile ilk anlaşmasını imzalar.
Genellikle müzikal filmlerde yer alır. Bütün zamanların en iyi müzikali seçilen "Singin' in the Rain"'de (Yağmurda Dans) Gene Kelly ile başrolü paylaşır. 1950'lerde plakları ve şarkılarıyla popüler olur.1950'de çekilen "Two Weeks With Love" filminde Carleton Carpenter ile düet yapar. "Aba Daba Honeymoon" isimli şarkısı 1951 yılının en çok dinlenen 3 şarkısından biridir. "Tammy" isimli şarkısı da 1950'lerde hit yapmıştır.
1950'lerde birçok filmin başrolünde oynar. Bundle of Joy (1956)isimli filmde ilk eşi Eddie Fisher ile birlikte "Tammy and the Bachelor" isimli filmde ise Leslie Nielsen ile rol oynar. "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" (1964)adlı filmle Oskara aday gösterilir ancak "Mary Poppins" ile Julie Andrews Oskara layık görülür.
1970'lerde TV şovunda sigara reklamına yer vermesi NBC (National Broadcasting Company) tarafından hoş karşılanmaz ve NBC şovu iptal eder. Debbie Reynolds bunu "Kariyerinin en büyük hatası" olarak nitelendirir.
Hala TV ve film çalışmalarını sürdürmektedir.
