Asıl adı Ebu’l-Kasım Mansur olan Firdevsi’nin yaşamı hakkında yeterli kesin bilgi yoktur. Yaşamı çeşitli söylencelere karışmış, eski kaynaklarda bir masal havasında anlatılmıştır. Firdevsi Tus kentinde soylu bir ailenin çocuğu olarak doğdu. Şehname’den, iyi bir öğrenim gördüğü, eski Farsça ile Arapça’yı ustalıkla kullanacak derecede öğrendiği anlaşılmaktadır. Daha gençlik yıllarında İran Tarihine büyük bir ilgi duydu. Halk arasında anlatılan efsane ve öyküleri de kapsayan büyük bir destan yazmak istiyordu. 974 yılında Şehname’yi yazmaya koyuldu.

Şairin bundan sonraki yaşamı üzerine çeşitli öyküler anlatılmaktadır. Yaygın olan öyküye göre Firdevsi, Şehname’yi Gazneli Sultan Mahmud’a sunmak için Gazne’ye gider; ama saraya girmekte zorluk çeker. Sarayın çevresinde dolaşırken üç saray şairi ile karşılaşır. Onlara dileğini söyler. Şairler Firdevsi’yi sınamak için küçük bir deneme yaparlar. Denemenin amacı şudur: Dizeleri “ şen ” hecesiyle biten bir dörtlük söylemek. Buna göre her biri sırayla bir dize söyleyecektir. Farsça’da “ şen “ hecesiyle biten üçten fazla sözcük bulunmadığını düşünen saray şairleri, Firdevsi’nin uyak bulamayacağından emindirler. Saray şairleri sırayla üç dize söyledikten sonra sıra Firdevsi’ye gelir. Firdevsi, İran’ın eski kahramanlarından Poşen’in adını dördüncü dizeye uyak yaparak dörtlüğü tamamlar. Bu kahramanın kim olduğunu bilmeyen şairler Firdevsi’nin açıklamalarına hayran kalırlar ve Firdevsi’yi Sultan Mahmud’a tanıtırlar.

Firdevsi, kısa zamanda Sultan Mahmud’un hayranlığını kazanır. Sarayda kendisine özel bir yer ayrılır ve Şehname’yi yazmayı burada sürdürür. Firdevsi’nin yazdığı bölümleri okudukça hayranlığı artan Sultan Mahmud şairin her beyti için bir altı ödenmesini buyurur. Ama vezir, Firdevsi’yi kıskandığı için ve bu ödemenin bütçeye büyük getireceği gerekçesiyle buyruğu savsaklayıp, ödemeyi yapmaz. Firdevsi ise kişiliğine yediremediği için veziri, Sultana şikayet edemez. Bu arada şairin yazdığı bölümler elden ele dolaşmakta, ünü yaygınlaşmaktadır. Ama bu durum şaire düşman kazandırır, sarayda onu çekemeyenler artar. Bu kişiler, Firdevsi’nin din yolundan sapmış biri olduğunu ileri sürerler ve söylentiler Sultana kadar ulaşır. Sonunda Firdevsi 60 bin beyitten oluşan Şehname’yi Sultan Mahmud’a sunar. Sultan şaire 60 bin altı yerine 60 bin gümüş verince Firdevsi, kendisini aşağılanmış hissederek saraydan ayrılır. Bir söylentiye göre aldığı paranın yarısını bir hamamcıya, yarısını da içtiği şerbetin karşılığı olarak şerbetçiye verir. Daha sonra Herat kentinde bir dostunun yanına sığınır.

Bazı kaynaklar Firdevsi’nin Herat’tayken Sultan Mahmud için ağır bir yergi şiiri yazdığından söz eder. Bazı kaynaklarda ise şairin, Herat’ta büyük bir caminin duvarına Sultan Mahmud için yazdığı övgü şiirini astığını ve bu övgüyü duyan Sultan Mahmud’un yapılan haksızlığı öğrendiği yazılıdır. Sultan Mahmud, hemen 60 bin altını Firdevsi’ye gönderir. Ama altınları getiren ulak, kentin bir kapısından girerken, Firdevsi’nin cenazesi de öbür kapıdan çıkmaktadır. Şairin kızı da gönderilen altınları bir hayır kurumuna bağışlar.

Firdevsi’nin Şehnamesi, İran’ın Arap egemenliğine girene kadarki tarihini içerir. İran tarihi ve mitolojisi, eldeki eski kitaplara, dilden dile dolaşan söylencelere ve öykülere dayanılarak yazılmıştır. Yapıt mesnevi biçimde düzenlenmiş 60 bin beyitlik bir şiirdir. Firdevsi yapıtını yazarken bir tarihçi gibi çalışmış ama tarihsel bilgileri güçlü şiir yeteneği ile işlemiştir. Yapıtın yazıldığı dönemde Arapça’nın çok yaygın olmasına karşın, Firdevsi Arap dili ve kültürünün egemenliği altındaki İran ulusuna, büyük bir tarih ve kültür zenginliğine sahip olduğunu göstermek istercesine kendi dillerinde bir yapıt sunmuştur. Yapıt çok yalın bir dille yazılmıştır. Şehname gerek şiirsel gücüyle, gerek bilgi zenginliğiyle Divan şairlerinin başyapıtlarından biridir. Bunu yanı sıra bir ulusun tarihi üzerine tek bir şair tarafından yazılmış benzer bir yapıt yoktur. Şehname dünya şiirinin, özellikle destan türünün büyük klasikleri arasındadır. Dünyanın birçok diline çevrilmiş olan yapıt Türkçe’ye ilk kez 16.yüzyılda Tatar Ali Efendi tarafından eksiksiz olarak çevrilmiştir. Günümüz Türkçe’sine ise Necati Lugal tarafından aktarılmıştır.
